Comment tenir ses résolutions du Nouvel An : 3 conseils simples pour ne pas abandonner

Resolutions: How to Stick to Them (For Real) This Year

3 simple keys to turn your intentions into lasting habits

Every new year carries a special scent — the feeling of starting fresh.

We reflect, we dream a little bigger, we write lists full of promises… and we tell ourselves: “This time, I’ll stick to it.”

And yet, just a few weeks later, motivation starts to fade.

Not because we lack willpower.

But because most resolutions are treated as wishes — not as plans.

The good news?

Sticking to your resolutions isn’t about heroic discipline.

It’s mainly about method, clarity, and being gentle with yourself.

In this article, I’m sharing a simple principle — and 3 easy tips — to help your resolutions finally become a real part of your life.

Why Resolutions Don’t Last (And It’s Not Your Fault)

Before we get to solutions, let’s take a quick look at reality:

resolutions often fail because they are…

  • too vague: “I want to get in better shape.”
  • too ambitious: “I’m changing everything all at once.”
  • too abstract: “I should…”
  • disconnected from everyday life: “I’ll do it when I have time.”

And most importantly:

they’re not integrated into daily life.

They stay somewhere in the back of our minds, without a place in our schedule…

until they simply disappear.

So, sticking to your resolutions means turning an intention into action — a desire into a clear path forward.

3 Simple Tips to Stick to Your Resolutions (For Real)

1) Write them down

This is the golden rule:

ideas vanish, words remain.

Writing your resolutions gives them real existence.

It’s a clear commitment.

And it makes you more honest: once it’s written, you immediately see what’s unclear or unrealistic.

How to do it:

Take 10 quiet minutes.

Write down all your wishes without filtering.

Read them again.

Then keep only the ones that truly matter.

The secret: one meaningful resolution is better than ten forgotten ones.

2) Give them a deadline

A wish feels nice.

A plan is powerful.

A deadline isn’t there to pressure you —

it’s there to anchor you in reality.

Examples:

“I want to take care of myself”

becomes: “I go for two walks per week until the end of March.”

“I want to eat lighter”

becomes: “I cook three homemade dinners per week in January.”

And if you have several goals?

Give yourself one theme per month — not everything at once.

3) Make them visible (and get support)

A resolution you never see… is a resolution that disappears.

The best thing you can do is make it visible — something you’ll notice several times a day, effortlessly.

Where to display them?

near your desk

on your fridge

in your bedroom

on a shelf

in a frame (yes — like a little personal manifesto)

The goal: to see it, remember it, and naturally keep motivation alive.

And most importantly: share it

A goal becomes easier when it becomes collective.

You support each other, encourage one another, and gently keep each other accountable.

Even one person is enough.

The Power of Small Wins: Your Secret Ally

One of the main reasons we abandon resolutions is the feeling that we’re not moving fast enough.

But sticking to a resolution isn’t about doing it perfectly.

It’s about coming back to it.

One walk counts, even if it’s not 10,000 steps.

One homemade meal counts, even if the rest of the day wasn’t perfect.

10 minutes of reading counts, even if it’s not an hour.

The brain loves progress.

And small wins create a positive cycle:

the more you succeed, the more you want to continue.

What if You Slip Up? (Totally Normal)

Here is the most important sentence in this article:

A resolution isn’t a contract. It’s a journey.

It’s not “all or nothing.”

It’s not “perfect or failed.”

It’s: I do my best, and I return to my goal as soon as I can.

If you miss a week, it’s not failure —

it’s a pause.

And you can start again.

A Mini Exercise to Start Today

Take 2 minutes and complete this sentence:

“This year, I choose to…”

and write just one resolution — simple, precise, human.

Then turn it into an action:

what?

how many times?

until when?

Finally, choose a place to display it.

Conclusion: A Kept Resolution Is a Promise to Yourself

Resolutions aren’t here to judge you.

They’re here to guide you.

And sometimes, keeping just one resolution is enough to change a whole year.

Because confidence is built like a fire:

So this year, don’t chase perfection.

Chase consistency.

And keep it simple.
